How to make a baby photo sing

1. Pick the photo — One baby, face clear, hands and dummy well away from the mouth. A slight turn is fine.

What to check on a baby photo

Check the cheeks and eyes alongside the mouth — on a round face, drift shows at the cheek line first. Also check nothing has crept over the lips: a hand or a dummy in the source photo will follow the mouth through the whole clip. The photo on this page is a generated, fictional child, and your own family photos are the only other thing you should be putting through this.

If it does not look right

• Mouth region distorting? Check for a hand near the face in the source before changing anything else.
• Movement looks exaggerated? Try a slower, quieter song. Small faces need less.
• Eyes or cheeks wobbling? Crop wider so the whole head and shoulders are in frame.

Do babies work as well as adults?

Slightly less reliably. Round faces have fewer hard edges for the model to lock on to, so a wider crop and a calmer song both help.

What if the baby's hand is near their face?

Pick a different photo. A hand across the lips is the most common failure, and no amount of tweaking the audio fixes it.

Should I post videos of my child online?

That is your call, but think about it before you do. A private clip for family is a very different thing from a public post.

Can I use a photo of someone else's child?

Only with the parent's permission. Rules on children's images vary by country, and this is the case worth being unusually careful about.

Can I use a well-known children's song?

Only if you own it or have cleared it. Many nursery rhymes are old enough to be in the public domain in some countries, but a specific recording of one is usually still protected, and what applies depends on where you are and where you publish.
